The fit we hope to find
As the Principal Engineer, you will own and ultimately be responsible for the architecture, quality, performance and security of our software stack. You will lead be the most senior hands-on engineer on our team, providing leadership on execution and technical direction. Along with our product team, you will spearhead the development of entirely new products and business lines that will shape the future of our company and the industry using state-of-the-art technology. You will be responsible to drive the engineering/architecture design for complex projects and review the designs of other engineers. You will rapidly prototype new ideas and drive the execution of critical projects. You will act as an example of engineering excellence for the rest of the team, and you will help them become more effective by providing feedback and coaching as needed in partnership with their managers. You will also stay up to date with the latest technology and you will introduce new processes and tools that will make our team more efficient. Finally, you will interface with the leadership team to advocate on behalf of engineering and participate in deciding our technical strategy and direction.

As a Principal Engineer, you will play a key role in shaping the future of SafeSize’s technology. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will be the most senior hands-on engineer on the team. You will be responsible to lead complex engineering projects, enhance our system architecture, improve our development processes and tools, and mentor a team of talented engineers.
To be successful in this role you will need to:
- Become an expert on the end-to-end architecture of our system and go deep into any component needed.
- Establish yourself as leadership’s go-to-person for technical questions and advise regarding our system.
- Lead the engineering design for critical projects and review key designs for other engineers.
- Manage complex, cross-functional projects, ensuring seamless collaboration between different engineering teams.
- Own the design of our system’s architecture with the goal to enable the addition of new capabilities, and improve performance, reliability and development speed.
- Prototype and develop new products and features.
- Collaborate with the CTO, Principal Product Manager and leads of different teams to define our product and technical strategy, including our long-term engineering goals.
- Foster a culture of technical excellence and mentor our engineers and tech leads via code reviews, design reviews and coaching sessions.
- Actively contribute to the hiring process by helping us recruit and screen candidates.
- Drive innovation and stay updated with the latest industry trends to incorporate into our technology stack.
The ideal candidate for this role is a generalist with a broad spectrum of technical skills, who is not afraid to dive deep into different technologies and learn new things. You will occasionally find yourself reviewing/discussing diverse topics such as security, databases, IoT, DNNs and UI development in the same day!
For this role, you will also be required to switch from very high-level conversations regarding product strategy with our leadership team to hands-on design and coding of new features and products.

Job requirements
What you brin
- B.S. Degree in Computer Science, Informatics or related field (higher degree preferred)
- 8+ years of experience in the industry, including the development and launch of at least one new major product or feature
- At least 2 years of experience being one of the most senior engineers on the team, coaching other engineers via code reviews, design reviews, one-on-ones etc. and advising leadership on technical decisions
- Strong experience with full-stack development and, especially, cloud services
- Very strong knowledge of JavaScript and at least one more high-level programming language (Java, Python, C++ etc.)
- Excellent distributed system design skills, including queuing systems, serverless technologies and database design (experience with containerization and/or ML/CV systems will be a huge plus)
- Experience hosting services in one of the major cloud providers (preferably AWS)
- Excellent understanding of the typical software development lifecycle and tools (git, Jira, CI/CD pipelines, QA processes etc.)
- Great clarity of thought and ability to communicate ideas both orally and in writing to engineers and non-technical people alike (e.g., leadership)
- Autonomous and able to deal with high-levels of ambiguity – should be able to take vague directions and convert them into execution plans
- Eager to constantly learn new things and investigate new technologies
